Looking For a Good Gift for a Senior Citizen? Try These Creative Ideas!

Doesn’t it feel wonderful to find that perfect gift, the one that will make your loved one’s face light up with joy? When it comes to the seniors we love, it is even more gratifying, as it can be challenging to come up with new and creative ideas. Seniors have many years’ worth of acquired treasures, and let’s face it: there is only so much delight to be experienced in getting a pair of socks or another tie.

If you’re looking for a good gift for senior citizens this holiday season, why not think outside the box? The St. Louis home care team at Compassionate Nursing Services has put together the following gift ideas for senior citizens to help stimulate some new ideas which are sure to brighten the day of the older adults you adore!

  • Customize a treasure. Turn treasured photographs into useful items that seniors can enjoy all through the year, such as photo blankets, puzzles, calendars, and lots of other options. A hardbound photo book is especially useful for those with Alzheimer’s disease. Include images of loved ones with names to assist the individual to remember who’s who, or make a book with pictures from his / her childhood for a beautiful way to reminisce.
  • Make a game plan. Assemble a basket of classic games, incorporating large-print playing cards and any other family favorites. Organize in advance with local friends and family to designate a weekly or monthly game night that will, of course, also work well with the senior loved one’s schedule. Tuck a calendar in the basket with dates and times highlighted, and then enjoy a year of enjoyable get-togethers!
  • Go high tech. Technology is improving on a regular basis, with a lot of gadgets geared towards improving life for senior loved ones. Choose between senior-friendly computers, tablets, and smartphones, a smart speaker to provide news and entertainment, or a safety-enhancing medical alert system. Be sure to include plenty of time to help your senior loved one learn how to work this new tech tool, too!
  • Give an experience. Many times, the gift most appreciated by seniors is the gift of taking pleasure in a personal experience with close friends and family. A gift certificate to an area spa for group manicures, hair styling, and a massage is a great way to make new memories together; or keep it simple and select a gift card to the senior’s favorite dining establishment. For a more cost-conscious idea, create a personalized booklet of coupons, redeemable when the older adult chooses for services such as mowing the grass, housecleaning, cooking, and more.

At Compassionate Nursing Services, nothing makes us happier than seeing the joy in the seniors we serve! Contact us at 314-432-4312 any time for additional holiday gift ideas, including the gift of specialized in-home care from our highly trained, experienced, and compassionate St. Louis home care team.  View our full service area here.
